PRRI participates in the Twenty-seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-27) 20 – 24 October 2025, in Panama City, Panama.
Key topic of interest on the agenda of SBSTTA 27 is the discussion on whether there is a need for the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to develop further guidance materials to support risk assessment in accordance with methodology laid down in the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
PRRI believes that the internationally agreed methodology laid down the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is scientifically sound and can be applied to any type of LMO.
While additional guidance materials for specific cases can be useful, producing more documents by COPMOP does not necessarily enhance biosafety or strengthen risk assessments. A more effective and tailored approach would be to address real, demonstrable gaps in countries’ capacity to apply Annex III in targeted hands-on training.
